Pettiskirt

This was my first ever attempt at a Pettiskirt, I didn't realise I never actually blogged about it!!! The fabric is just that netting with glued on sequins - and I wouldn't recommend using that fabric at all. The netting works wonderfully, the problem is the glue on the back of the sequins, it sticks to the needle of the machine and builds up making the needle stick in the fabric.

This was one of the dresses I made that saw Isla through winter. I think in total I made about 6 of them for her as they really were just so comfy looking and could be accesorised easily for extra warmth. You would think I'd have learnt that in my 5 years of being a Mum that kids and white or light colours dont' mix - but I havn't learnt that yet so silly me made this dress in cream colour. Yeah I know what was I thinking.

Today I thought it was quite fitting to post my Christmas pressie cake I made :) Pressie and cake - how could one not love it. Duct tape - one of the many uses

If you can't fix it with duct tape, your not using enough I say ;-) I bow down to whoever was the creator that magical tape, it's so versatile and handy and today I thought I would show off a little itty bitty duck bag I made out entirely (except for the snaps) out of duct tape. Yes you heard correctly, this whole bag is made of duct tape.

Biscuits, biscuits and more biscuits

Yep that is alot of biscuits!!!! The kids and I went a little crazy cutting out various shapes out of the cookie dough and oooh yum did they make the house smell delicious whilst being cooked. Is there any yummier smell in the world than freshly baked bikkies aroma wafting through the house??? We all had a ball decorating the bikkies too. Yum and fun!

Today I also thought I'd share with you a picture from when I was around 8 years old - I loved being crafty back then as you can tell!!! (That's me in the lighter coloured tracksuit).

In August 2008 I started this blog and honestly I wasn't sure what I was doing at all (alot of the time I still have no idea), but we are plodding along.

Today though it made me realise that I really should post more of my creations so later today I shall update with as many of my creation photo's that I have hiding away all lonely and sad in my photo folders on my computer.

Chocolate wrapper xmas decoration

I love to recycle things to make my crafts (I am sure you'll have figured that out by now though). This pretty star decoration was made with out of the chocolate wrapper you see pictured. It's really not hard to do at all either - just cut the wrapper into strips all the same length and join together 2 strips at a time (2 strips = 2 loops). Once you've done 2 loops join those loops to 2 more loops etc etc till you get one pretty star!

Reclaiming back my vegas shirt

What do you do when your fav old t-shirt gets a great big dirty stain on it???? Well if your like me you keep it in your cupboard for the next 2 years - with it surviving many a wardrobe cull and finally, yes finally you set yourself a deadline......

Do something with the shirt or chuck it into the rag pile!!!!!!!

So I chopped it off just above the stain, grabbed some material I had picked up from the op shop yonks ago (omg I just said yonks, havn't heard that word in aaaaaaaaaages) and I whip up a bandage type skirt and attach to the top.

Voila a new dress!!!!

Cloth Pads

YUCK is the first thing that comes to mind when I think of disposable pads. Funnily enough though that's the word many people use when they hear of reusable cloth pads. Those people though have no idea of the luxury they are missing out on.

Why would you put something near your delicate bits that is bleached something chronic and does nothing to help with the pain many experience at that time of the month. As bizarre as it sounds cloth pads can actually help reduce the pain. If you don't believe me try it ;-) And I bet you too will be singing the praises of cloth soon too.

I'm bringing aprons back

I love aprons I really do! Seriously how can one not like them? I know that some think they are for old people but nooooo I am here to prove you wrong - very wrong. Aprons are cute, sexy, sassy, oh and useful too lol!

This pattern is the Tea Party Apron and comprises of a pattern that ranges from childrens size to adults. It's a half apron and I think looks very much like a ruffle skirt that one day sometime soon I think I might even attempt wearing it out and seeing what ppl think. Sounds like fun to me ;-)

Polymer Clay Cake

I love sushi - no better food in the world in my opinion. It's got many varities and as far as I am aware pretty good for you. Well hey that sea weed has gotta be good for you at least that's wrapped around it - right?

This was my first attempt at making a cane so be gentle on me please lol. After a little bit of searching online I did discover the pop it in the freezer for 5 mins then cut the cane trick - and wow the difference it made was incredible (no more mushed colours blending into each other). Who thinks of that type of thing though - clever people whoever they are.

Frilly Bikini

With a brand new overlocker who I have now named Lulu (every good appliance needs a name I feel). I decided to put her to good use today and make a bikini.

Now I am really big on reclaiming fabric and discovered this lacey pillowcase at the 2nd hand store and instantly thought it would make an adorable bikini.

Strawberry Fields Forever....

Loving the look of the Redondo skirt I see many people make and the Hermosa top but not having the money right now to be able to buy the patterns I set myself a challenge to make my own version.

And I think it actually worked quite well.

The baker boy hat I can't claim I made the pattern for though - I printed a template of a baker boy cap from online for that.

Ballet Bags

A friend has a daughter who has just started ballet and tap dancing. Not having a sewing machine her Mum was going to sew her some bags by hand - I hate handsewing and have no idea how anyone can find that enjoyable. So offerered to make her some bags instead.

The inner is lined in Disney Princess flannel, one in pink princess the other in purple princess (matched with their co-ordinating coloured bag).

Recon jumper

This longies and shorties set started out life as a wool jumper. I picked it up at the local market for $0.50c - bargain eh!

These were made for when Isla was still in nappies and I was in desperate need for more woolies. However, I do now knit so this was the next best thing.

The best part was she was just at the right size that I was able to make a pair of longies and a pair of shorties out of the one medium sized adult jumper.

Crochet Bikini

She wore an insy winsy teeny weeny creamy coloured crochet bikini....lol

A friend of mine (who has THE hottest body out of anyone I know) was after a crochet bikini and asked if I could make her one.

Now, there were a few problems with me doing that....

I don't know how to crochet
I have no overlocker
I've run out of elastic
Never ever made a bikini in my life
No pattern.

So I put on my thinking cap and well my thinking cap was actually having a good day today as I remembered an old tablecloth I picked up at the op shop months and months ago for $0.20c that I had bought to use as an embellishment on a dress (but never did).

Looking at the crochet tablecloth I was thinking that those holes in it were pretty damn big and nipples would poke through them - which I guess could work, but wasn't really the look I had in mind. Middle of last year I was scrummaging through the Spotlight remnants basket and discovered half a metre of flesh/tan colour lycra which was $0.50c - had no use for it at the time, but when lycra is that cheap I would be crazy not to buy it.

Now fingers crossed it actually fits her ;-)

Frilly knickers tutorial

For the back piece of the pattern the measurements are as follows:

Picture 1

A is 19cm
B is 6cm
C is 19cm
D is 6cm
E is 21cm

You will need to cut 2 of the back pieces out of material

For the front piece of the pattern the measurements are as follows

A is 30cm
B is 6cm
C is 10cm
D is 13cm
E is 14cm

Grab both of the back pieces of material with right sides together, straight stitch the pieces so that they are joined in the middle now.

Join the front part of the undies and the back part of the undies at the crotch.

Zig zag stitch all around the waist and leg holes (or overlock if your lucky enough to have an overlocker).

Then for a nicer finish straight stitch a seam so the overlocking is on the inside

Cut a piece of elastic approx 13cm long and this will be sewn onto the back seam

Join the back to the front of the undies at the side seams now

Cut elastic for the waistband and legs

I used for the legs 27cm per leg and the waist 45cms

I could walk around all day cuddling these little blankies myself - they are so super soft and fluffy, perfect for a little one to cuddle up to.

With tags on them to entertain and touch I think they are a perfect gift for a wee bubba.

Strawberry Apron (for kids)

How can you not love aprons - I think they are just adorable. Every child needs their own cooking apron - and well I think strawberry's are cute, so just had to make a strawberry apron. Silly me though had a blonde moment cutting the bias tape and cut it the wrong way so that's why it's a little skewy looking. But still even with icky bias I think it still is utterly scrumptious lol!

Cloth Pads

Ewww to some, but that's their loss really. What are these funny shaped little creations. Well, they are cloth pads - yes that is right reusable, washable cloth pads.

Why you ask, well apart from the obvious that it saves money, they also reduce the pain (if that dosn't make you want to switch nothing will)!!! If you don't believe me that it helps with the pain try them - and I bet you won't be dissapointed.

Alot nicer feeling on your 'delicates' than horrible bleached cotton. These are topped in flannel which is closest to the skin then with 4 layers of bamboo (which most of us know is ultra absorbant) and then a PUL backing to avoid leakage.

They are only pinned in this picture, but they ended up being snapped so the wings fold around the undies and snap underneath. The back is contoured which I think helps prevent any leaks and it is all sewing machine overlock type stitch so there is no scratchyness from the cotton.

And seriously with those funky prints why would you want to use a boring overbleached, full of chemicals pad that you have to throw away?

Dinosaur Hair Brush

He's made from clay and glued onto the brush. And yep I know he has no mouth - but he still looks kinda cute don't you think?

Valentine's Baby Outfit

With Valentine's Day around the corner I thought it best to post a creation with that in mind. I love, love, love the feeling of this material I used (soo soft). It was a little hard to sew with as it's quite stretchy but I managed.

The nappy is a 'AIO' for anyone interested.

Lightning McQueen

Lightning McQueen was the first ever thing that Ozzy took an interest in without us persuading him to actually like it - yes, yes I am guilty of trying to get him to like Tigger and Piglet etc, epic fail for me with those characters, they just were not the character for him.

Enter Lightning McQueen, a race car that thinks that the he is the BEST thing ever when it comes to racing. Long story short he learns a few lessons about life and really is quite a nice race car. He also meets the cutest little friends on his journey. How could you not love Lightning McQueen after watching the movie (and for those parents who are onto their 40th viewing of it - did you notice all the detail in that movie? OMG it's incredible, ie the tyre tracks left by the planes in the sky, the fly's are actually little itty bitty cars, so adorable)!

Yes, I know it's now the cool thing to do (wear 'green') but, I was doing it before it was 'cool'! Anyway one day I spied with my little eye the cutest slogan ever. I was actually googling 'christmas' and this appeared in my search.

Baby Maternity Shirt

The shirt I can't claim I made - it's just one I picked up at K-mart that I liked the style of (it was just a plain white shirt).

The baby on the belly though I hand beaded onto the shirt. It is a mock of the Baboig maternity shirts - but I can't justify paying $90 for a shirt so made one instead.

I really am not a fan of the 'Australiana' clothes out there for kids to wear. They are either really quite boring or just not small enough to fit my two.

Sooo this is what I came up with. Ozzy of course needed a pair of boardies (is there anything more Australian)?? And Isla well I love dresses so a dress was created for her.

Creating treasure from trash!

Inspired to make something from trash into a treasure I put on my thinking cap. I had ages ago wanted to try my hand at making a dress from plastic bags so have been purposely avoiding taking my green bags to Woolies to shop to get enough plastic bags. Finally I had enough - it took a while as they all kept tearing so were rendered useless.

The bags I then cut into panels and ironed 2 bags together (with cooking paper between the iron and plastic) and it fused the bags together making the plastic thick enough to sew with.

And this was the end result. A little dress made from plastic bags.

Old Fashioned Cinnamon Scrolls

I know I've been very slack updating my blog but I am back!!!!

Having been in quite a cooking mood lately - adventuring into the unknown trying recipes I would never have tried before in my life. Good way to start the new year isn't it - trying new things.

So, I tried my hand at making old fashioned cinnamon scrolls - and wow! I am incredibly impresses with this recipe. It's a little time consuming but I got around that by making the dough just before I was to go to bed and leaving it to rise overnight. It sure did make them lovely and fluffy.

Another variation I did was adding sultana's to the cinnamon sugar mix - I like sultana's in mine. Isla however wasn't that big of a fan of the cooked sultana's and kept telling me that she couldn't eat them as they were boogers!!!! Not sultanas. If her boogers look like that I am concerned lol. Oh and changed the cooking time down to 15 mins (but it would work better at 10 -15 mins).

If you give this recipe a go let me know how it went and if you had as much success as me with this.

For allergy/intollerances or just plain dislikes I changed the following ingredients in mine:

Butter I instead used Nuttelex
Milk I used Soy Milk
Egg I used Orgran egg replacer (which is 100% egg free).

There is a charity auction coming up soon that I am involved in. I couldn't resist the idea of making a pettiskirt for it - so this is what I came up with.

I am in absolute love with making these skirts - they are just soo easy to sew and the fabric I use (netting) is very forgiving lol! I usually prefer to make the skirt with more layers but that costs more money and materials so this one had to suffice with just a few layers - but still turned out rather cute I think.

Ozzy's Racing Shirt

Ozzy had to get into the 'team spirit' of things and so it was decided that Ozzy needed a little shirt in the same colour as his Daddy's race suit.

Adam helped me draw up the pattern for the shirt (the collar was the hardest part) and voila this is the end result.

Teddy Bear Dress

This pattern was ridiculous. The size I made was supposedly newborn. I would hate to have a newborn the size they anticipated would fit this dress size I really would!!!!

I made this little outfit for a forum swap. The fabric I had sitting in my material stash for ages unsure of what to actually do with it. But, I think this turned out really cute.

The nappy is a AI2.

Newborn Swing Top & Bloomers

I had made up this pattern in Isla's size previous and wanted to check out that my pattern drawing was half decent and made one in newborn size to check out that my measurements etc were all correct. Which is why I made this little outfit despite having a newborn.

I really loved the fabrics print - so bright and vibrant (great for Summer) ;-)

Mater (Cars) applique

This is an applique I did on the back of a nappy. The picture I stole from one of Ozzy's colouring books. I admit that perhaps it could have had a little more detail on it - but I am not the best artist in the world so didn't feel like unpicking wayward threads because I got over zealous trying to draw things onto Mater with threads.

Pettiskirt

I absolutely love this little skirt, as does Isla. When I started sewing it I thought 'oh dear' I am going to really struggle to make this I just know it (I had no pattern). However, it ended up being incredibly easy once I figured out the waistband.

(PS Temarre - the idea for this skirt was from Martha Stewart lol)!

The original idea was meant to be 'Euro inspired' I think perhaps I may have missed the target a little as Euro is more about frill and mismatched colour combo's but I still adore this set though.

I wanna be a hippy

I always get that song 'I wanna be a hippie' by Technohead in my head everytime Isla wears this dress. It was created as a theme challenge - which was 'vintage'. The pattern was a vintage Simplicity one and the shirt fabric as luck would hate it was a scrap of vintage material I scored at a local school fete for a bargain price of $0.20c for approx a metre of it.

Kimono Dress

Kimono's are just sooo femine. What better for a little girl than a kimono inspired little dress then.

I searched everywhere for the type of fabric I wanted and couldn't find it. But on my way back out of a failed Spotlight search I discovered this gorgeous fabric in the furnishings section.

It worked perfectly I thought. I then made a variety of different print kimono inspired dresses but these 2 were my favourite.

Wiggly Woo

This wiggles dressing gown/cape just screamed out for a matching nappy. As luck would have it Spotlight was kind to me and had a remnant of wiggles fleece in the basket which I quickly snaffled before anyone else saw it (that type of material isn't often found in the off cuts basket).

I was inspired to make this set after Isla made a habit of letting us only get a nappy on her bum after a shower before running off wanting to play. As it was winter it would be really silly of me to have actually let her continue playing near naked so needed something that was easy to put on a squirmy toddler (thus the reason for only the one snap just under the neck).

Fleece seemed like the most ideal fabric to use as it dries super quick and is lovely and snuggly warm.

Fish Undies

What is it with kids underwear only being available from size 2-3???? The average kid that toilet trains around age 2 has no chance of fitting this size nicely - they end up usually lovely and baggy around the legs, not a good look.

I picked up cheaply on ebay a vintage knitwit pattern and thought I would try my hand at making a pair of undies for Ozzy. He absolutely loved them!

Ballet Shoe Bags

A friend of mine asked if it was at all possible I made her daughter a bag to hold her little ballet shoes in. I didn't really know what exactly she wanted (but knew she'd be happy with whatever it was I sent to her.

Berry spiked chocolate brownies

Brownies and biscuits baking is something that I have just never been able to do, everytime I did attempt to make them they would stick to the tins. However, recently having discovered silicone bakeware I have discovered that I actually really do like to cook biscuits and brownies now.

So, yesterday I attempted a berry spiked chocolate brownies (all 100% dairy free), so even Isla could eat them. And well seeing as ppl came back for 2nd's and some even 3rd's I think it turned out really well.

Funky Hair Brush

I made this little In the Night Garden hair brush and mirror set for a swap on one of the forums I frequent and unfortunately despite Adam assuring me that he had wrapped in bubble wrap ensuring it wouldn't break the worst happened and it was in pieces when it arrived at it's destination.

Anzac Day Dress

I know Anzac Day was a while ago but after a bit of persuasion from a few ppl that were keen on reading a sewing blog from me I have decided to start today.

This dress was inspired by the fact that on Anzac Day we don't usually dress up. That had me a little confused here we have all these ppl down at services paying respect and wearing tracky dacks and thongs. It just didn't seem right to me. Thus came the idea for a Anzac Day Dress.
